The End

I read two 250 page books in 14 hours.
My reading habits didn't change. I felt forced to read even though I got to read something I liked. I also don't feel I should be punished for being able to read and comprehend things fast.

Total time read: 14 hours
The two books I read: Uglies and Ashes of Roses

Uglies 1 hour

Tally's day was here. She wasn't as excited as she would be if Shay was here to share it with her. But Shay was long gone by now.
She gets to the hospital where the remake all happens. She's there for an hour and then the doctor greets her with, "There's something wrong with your operation." Shocked Tally freeks out and the Doctor says to go with him and they get into a hovercar.
Tally is taken to Special Circumstances. There, a lady talks to Tally and asks her questions about Shay. Where did she go. Why did she leave. Did Tally Know anything about it?? And Tally was sworn to secrecy and told the lady nothing. The lady proceeds to tell Tally that she will be ugly forever if she did not tell them anything. She leaves and that's where I stopped reading.

Uglies 1 hour

Tally and Shay get in a really big fight. Tally is fed up with how Shay doesn't want to grow up (and be pretty). Shay is always wanting to do tricks and be rebellious. And when Tally talks about being pretty, Shay blows her off. So one night they finally blow up at eachother. They go one week without talking ot eachother. Tally wants to talk to Shay but keeps finding it childish to write a ping (a letter) to her. Out of the ranom blue Shay knocks on Tally's window in her dorm. She invites Shay in and they talk. Shay talks of how she'd been thinking about what Tally said. And Shay tells Tally that she's running away.

Before the fight-

While teaching Tally how to hoverboard, they went on trips to the Rusty Ruins. Shay told Tally about how there was another world besides the one they were living in. One where not everything was fake and programmed.

Shay was running away to that outside place and Tally was welcome to come if she wanted to. Of course Tally didn't want to. So Shay was off. And Tally was there. By herself. Again.

To continue..

The girls come back from Hoverboarding and make Shay a profile. Shay doesn't find it quite as entertaining as Tally of course. Tally goes on about how Shay is mostly Pretty already and that it was really rare to see that. Only 10 people in Pretty History had been born pretty. Shay had full lips and pretty eyes. Tally was jealous that she looked like that but knew that soon she would look pretty too.
This hour wasn't really an interesting one. Tally and Shay just go on about how they were excited and not excited to turn.

Uglies 1 hour

I continued with Tally meeting Shay, another ugly. She was escaping Pretty Town when she ran into her. Tally had gone over to Pretty Town to see Peris and she ended up setting off the fire alarm.
Uglies are all about tricks. Being rebellious is huge! So of course going into Pretty Town and setting off the fire alarm was HUGE! Shay held Tally in high respect. Over the next three weeks, they become best friends and Tally tries talking to Shay about turning pretty and how exciting it will be. Shay doesn't really find it as exciting as Tally does. As Littlies, they have this program that takes their profile and you can tweek it and make yourself look pretty. Tally went to show Shay all the ones she had created, and asked Shay if she'd done any and of course Shay had said no. So Tally wanted to make her some. Shay said not until they had gone hoverboarding. (a cool future device I hope we get soon.) Shay had taught Tally how to Hoverboard and now Tally is just as good (maybe even better) than Shay. I stopped reading here.

Uglies 1 hour

I started out this new book by meeting Tally Youngblood. She explains how when you're sixteen that you go thru this operation that makes you Pretty. She and her best friend Peris have been waiting for this to come. Peris is 3 months and 22 days older than Tally, so he goes thru the operation first. Tally misses Peris and goes to Pretty Town. (where all the Pretties go after they turn.) She has to sneak around because she is Ugly. If she was spotted, they would tell her that they would never turn her Pretty.

Here ends my reading.

The End of Ashes of Roses

I'm finally finished with my 246 page book. It ended with the fire at the triangle shirtwaist factory. The title has to do with Rose's two friends named Rose. They called each other by their last name because their first names were the same. Klein and Belini both died in the fire but it was because they jumped from the 9th floor and hit the sidewalk. Rose only suffered minor injuries. Her hands are blistered and the back of her legs. She found Maureen and Maureen was harmless. They found Mr. Garoff eventually and helped him find Gussie. Gussie died. She went back to help an Italian woman instead of going with Rose to safety.
Mr. Garoff is going back to Russia and so the girls need to either find a new apartment or go back to Limerick, Ireland. They leave me with, "We'll go back and talk to uncle Patrick"

Ashes of Roses

I read a ton this week. (I couldn't post yesterday because blogger wasn't letting me in. :( sorry)
I read for two hours but all that happened and all they described was the fire. Rose explains (in super detail) how she got out of the fire and how she could have jumped out of the 9th story window. She lost her sister Maureen. That is where I ended. Sorry I can't go into detail like I usually do, but I have to finish my English project. This was actually the most boring 2 hours ever...

Ashes of Roses pp. 193-234

I left off with the four girls going to a nickolodean. Which is a movie theater. I think this is where they get the nickolodean channel from. The girls enjoyed the movie and Rose and Maureen went along home. When they got to the apartment, Gussie wasn't home yet. She works the Shabbes and then goes to the union to help out. She is really big on the Union stuff. She tries to persuade people to join the union so they can change working conditions for the ladies at the triangle shirtwaist factory. Right now they have no heat/air conditioning, their lunch is horrid etc. Gussie is trying to get as many people to join the union as she can because she a firm beliver in Labor rights.

Ashes of Roses pp. 155-193

I left off with Rose starting her job at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. There were many many many girls that worked there. She had taken an elvator for the first time. She didn't like it. gussie brought her to the table area where she would be working. She explained to Rose that this would be a little different than what she had lerned at the apartment. But Rose caugh on quickly and before she knew it, she was flying by like everyone else. It gets to be lunch time and the two girls eat the lunch they brought. Rose meets two other girls named Rose. they go by Belini and Klein, their last names. They become friends and Belini asks Rose if she wants to go to the nickolodean this weekend.
They spent alot of time explaining the Factory building.

Ashes of Roses pp. 118-154

The two girls, Maureen and Rose, are off on their own. With the money they got from the tickets, they were able to find a little apartment and rent out a room. The man they are renting from has a daughter that works at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Her name is Gussela. She's pretty and Rose looks up to her very much.
Rose had taken some stems home for the girls to all work on. She and Maureen finished them and Rose went to take them back. She gets there and the man tells her to come back later at night when the shop closes. So she came back at around eight o'clock. He tells her to take off her coat and then he thrusts himself on her and starts kissing her. Frightend, she runs out without her pay and her coat.
She gets back to the apartment and get a Gussela finds out what happened. She and Rose go back the next day to get the pay, her jacket, and to tell him off. They walk out with her coat, and three whole dollars. They have succeeded.
Gussela continues to talk to Rose about the factory. She brings home a sewing machine and teaches Rose how to use it. Then tells Rose she'll try and get her a job at the factory.
This is where I end.

Ashes of Roses pp. 96-117

To continue-

After Elsa leaves for work the next morning, Rose leaves to get the supplies to begin her work at home. When she gets there, all the girls give her the feeling that they don't really like her that much. Then one of the girls explained that when Rose takes flowers home to make it cuts there job down. making them not get paid as much. So then Rose felt bad but really didn't want to stay in her current situation so she took them home anyway. She walked in the door with the supplies and started immediatley teaching her mother and sister what to do. Not long after they got started, Elsa walks in the door with her two girls and a boyfriend. The one lets out a scream because her boyfriend just saw the lil 'greenies' working a 'sweatshop' in her kitchen and livingroom. Then Elsa and Rose's uncle are talking in their bedroom and decide to send the family back to Ireland.
They get to the boat and Rose demands her ticket back to stay in America and pay her own way. Then Maureen wants to stay too. So Rose's mom and her little sister bridget go back to Ireland by her father.
This is where I ended.

Ashes of Roses pp. 65-95

This weekend was also a four day weekend. I didn't read much, but I haven't been feeling good lately. So I'm proud to have atleast put in a half hour.
I started out reading this time with Rose talking about getting a job to help the family get a flat of their own. They live with her uncle (her dad's brother) and they do not get along. (I don't remember if I posted that already). She wanders out in the city of New York walking in and out of stores looking for a job. She figures out that they call the immigrants 'greenies'. She finally walks into a store and asks the lady if she has any work. The lady responds with a no but proceeds to give her a peice of paper with a name and address on it. She says to tell this man that Rose knows her. She thanks the lady and walks forever to find the given address. She finally arrives. Walking in, she hears noises coming from all different directions and the building was run down and dark. The paper said apt. 4. There was no apartment 4. She keeps walking. At the end of the hall there was a door with a number 4. She knocks. The man opens the door and invites her in. This is a paper flower making 'factory'. The man and Rose talked and she started working that second.
It was getting late and she had to get back home to her uncle's. When she walked in the door everyone was freeking out because she was gone so long. She talked to her mom about the job and Elsa (her uncle's wife), found out and flipped because she was working in the rundown part of town and she can't have that going around. So ROse and her mom talk about it and Rose ends up bringing work home for the three of them to do.

Ashes of Roses pp. 1-64

This weekend was a four day weekend and I only read for an hour. I know. I probably could have read more but I was busy hanging out with my friends! At least I got an hour in.
My book is called Ashes of Roses. It's by Mary Jane Auch.
I read the first 64 pages and so far it's been about Rose and her family's trip to America. It's a history book. She talks about the boat and how crappy the food, the sleeping, and the lack of showering is.
They finally reach Ellis Island and she talks about the tests the immigrants have to go thru. Her little brother, Joseph Nolan, has trachoma and her father must take the baby back to Ireland because they won't let the trachoma into America.
She continues with them finally reaching her uncle's house. Her uncle's house is a much nicer house than her old one back in Ireland. It has running water and heat. Something she had lived without. She and her family aren't so welcome in her uncle's house.
This is where I ended my reading. It seemed like a good spot to stop.

I will continue with another post soon.
